Level Ex, a Chicago tech company that makes video games for physicians to learn medical skills, has been purchased by a German firm.
Brainlab, a Munich-based digital medical technology company, said it's purchased Level Ex for an undisclosed sum.
Level Ex said that with the support of Brainlab, it plans to add to the number of its employees. It also plans to release new games in the areas of dermatology, orthopedics and oncology over the next year, alongside its current games in general and interventional cardiology and airway management.
“Our mission is to advance the practice of medicine through play: unleashing video game technology and design to improve skill and accelerate the adoption curve of new techniques and technologies in healthcare. I can't imagine a better place to fulfill that mission than Brainlab — a company that has fiercely advanced the cutting edge of medicine for decades and continues to build platforms that service broad ecosystems in healthcare," Sam Glassenberg, founder and CEO of Level Ex, said in a statement.
Earlier this year, Level Ex moved into a 20,000-square-foot office in the Loop, double the size of its former River North location that can accommodate up to 125 employees.
Level Ex said that it has 105 employees and is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Brainlab. The five-year-old company has raised more than $17 million.
It "will continue to independently operate from its downtown Chicago office retaining its name, management team, and medical and surgical gaming product lines," the company said.
