A Chicago company that makes healthy food that’s delivered weekly to your door has been acquired by a Milwaukee company.
Milwaukee-based Dohmen, a heath, wellness and fitness company founded in 1858, announced it has acquired Chicago-based Cooked. Cooked creates chef-crafted meals that come in oven and microwave-safe containers that can be heated in minutes. The startup focuses on healthy options like signature Wholefoods meals, Whole30 approved meals, and plant-based meals.
Terms of the deal weren't disclosed.
Cooked was founded in 2014 by Chef Jona Silva and his wife, Erin. The startup delivers its meals to 28 states, and ships twice a week. The company said it delivers thousands of meals across the United States each week.
Dohmen President Dale Mittelstaedt said the company is working to revitalize people and communities "using food as the primary intervention," and the addition of Cooked is a perfect fit for its mission.
"By acquiring Cooked, we now have the scale, reach and operational expertise to take another step closer to the launch of our comprehensive offering focused on prevention of illness, with healthy food choices at the core," Mittelstaedt said in a statement. "Cooked provides a key element because it has successfully operationalized healthy food production, proprietary packaging and delivery of fresh meals (rather than frozen) across the nation."
Cooked is one of several meal delivery services available to time-strapped diners who'd rather not order takeout. Meal kit companies like Blue Apron and Home Chef allow customers to receive all the meal prep ingredients needed to cook a healthy meal at home, and Chicago startup Tovala sells ready-to-cook meals that work with its smart oven.
Cooked is just the latest acquisition from Dohmen, which also bought Milwaukee food delivery business Focused Fork in December.
