NBA superstar LeBron James and Lyft are working to bring free Divvy bike access to Chicagoans who need it the most.

Lyft announced Tuesday that it has teamed up with James' company Uninterrupted to offer free bikeshare programs to thousands of young people in cities across the U.S. Lyft will provide free one-year Divvy memberships to eligible 16- to 20-year-olds in Chicago, and it will work with The Y to identify people who could benefit from such a program.

The initiative will begin in the spring in New York City via its Citi Bike program, and will then expand to Chicago and the Bay Area, Lyft said.

“With LeBron as our inspiration, we want to demonstrate how transportation can be a spark that helps young people reach their full potential. The future of transportation is exciting, and we feel a deep responsibility to help make transportation accessible to all,” John Zimmer, Lyft co-founder and president, said in a statement.

The program is part of Lyft's LyftUp initiative, which aims to expand transportation access to those in need. The initiative offers discounted car, bike and scooter rides to help low-income residents get access to healthy food, job interviews and to get out and vote.
