Where do Chicago techies want to work? Grubhub, Braintree and Groupon, according to a new report from job marketplace Hired.

Hired's 2019 Global Brand Health Report looked at tech hiring trends across a range of U.S. cities to find out where tech talent wants to work the most. The company surveyed 3,800 tech workers from across its platform, asking software developers, product managers, designers and data scientists to identify which companies they’d most like to work for.

Grubhub, Braintree and Groupon led the way in Chicago. The three VC-backed, exited tech companies were followed by some of Chicago's legacy brands like United Airlines, Discover and MorningStar.

Beyond the top 10 were familiar tech and startup names like Trunk Club (12), Sprout Social (14), Uptake (16) and Jellyvision (19).

The average tech worker salary in Chicago is $114,000, according to Hired, which includes software engineers, product managers, data scientists and product designers. That's up 1% from the year before.

Chicago techies noted that the three things they value most in an employer are compensation, the opportunity to learn new skills and company culture, according to the report.

Almost two thirds (65%) of Chicago candidates said they're interested in working 100% remotely, and 62% said they would engage with a company that reaches out if they have a recognizable company name.

Hired's report also identified some disturbing trends when it comes to the wage gap. Men are offered higher salaries than women for the same job at the same company 60% of the time, and companies offer women 3% less on average than men for the same roles, according to the report.
