A Chicago startup that got its start making caffeinated sparkling teas is hopping onto the CBD trend as it launches a new line of hemp-infused wellness shots.

Tempo, which launched in 2017, is making 2.5-ounce shots that have 25 milligrams of hemp-derived CBD, and are designed to enhance productivity and relieve stress, the startup says.

The shots come in two versions. The first one, called “Focus,” is flavored with green tea, ginger and ashwagandha, and contains caffeine. The second version, called "Recover," is flavored with rooibos, blueberry and turmeric, and doesn’t contain any caffeine.

“We’re all about the possibilities for innovation in the better-for-you beverage category,” said Ryan Crane, the founder and CEO of Tempo, in a statement. “While interest in cannabis-infused beverages has been surging for a while now, we saw an opportunity to take a more purposeful, clean and functional approach and create a beverage packed with superfoods that is simultaneously convenient for the active, on-the-go professional.”

The shots can be purchased at Goddess and Grocer, Lyfe Kitchen, Local Foods, Urban Pantry and Chicago Health Foods, as well as cafes like Avondale Coffee and Kanela Breakfast Club.

Tempo originally launched its sparking tea beverage on Kickstarter in 2017, where it raised more than $11,000. The drinks are made from organic teas and spices, have no calories, added sugars or sweeteners, and are naturally caffeinated. They come in three flavors: Matcha, black and hibiscus.

As cannabidiol, or CBD, has become increasingly popular and accepted as a wellness product, several beverage companies are looking to capitalize on the trend. Companies such as New York-based Recess, and Los Angeles-based Sprig and Vybes, are all selling CBD- or THC-infused waters, teas and sodas.

“We all look for better solutions to improve our daily performance, manage stress, and to relax—and we should be able to use these products, conveniently, amidst the ups and downs of our busy lives,” Crane said.
