Chicagoans and tourists shopping along Michigan Avenue can now experience Amazon's latest "cashierless" convenience store as the e-commerce giant opens yet another Amazon Go store in Chicago.
Amazon announced Tuesday that it has opened a new Amazon Go store at the Illinois Center, its fourth such store in Chicago and tenth overall.
Located just off the Mag Mile at 111 E. Wacker Drive, the newest Amazon Go store features ready-to-eat breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack items, along with grocery essentials, Amazon Meal Kits and other convenience items. It also features local vendors like 606 Fresh, Farmer’s Fridge and Troubadour Bakery.
The 1,950 sq. ft. space is open Monday-Friday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on Saturday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Other Chicago Amazon Go locations include the Ogilvie Transportation Center, 113 S. Franklin St. and 144 S. Clark St.
Amazon Go stores work like this: Shoppers download the Amazon Go app on their phone and scan a QR code at a turnstile when they walk in. Each store is outfitted with cameras and sensors that know when you pick something off a shelf, allowing shoppers to grab items and simply walk out without interacting with a cashier. Amazon automatically charges you for the items and sends a receipt to your phone shortly after your visit.
Amazon also has four Go stores in its hometown of Seattle, and two in San Francisco. The company reportedly wants to open 3,000 Go stores by 2021.
