There's been speculation for years that Motorola may finally bring back the Razr, its iconic flip phone that has over the years become a point of tech nostalgia for those who grew up using the popular device.
Motorola has consistently denied those rumors, but now it appears that the Razr phone may indeed get reborn.
Motorola is reviving the Razr in the form of a smartphone with a foldable screen, according to the Wall Street Journal. The device is expected to cost $1,500, and Motorola's parent company Lenovo is working on a deal with Verizon to get the device on shelves as soon as February, according to the WSJ.
Launched by Chicago-based Motorola in 2004, the Razr sold 130 million units over its four-year lifetime, making it the best-selling flip phone in the world. The phone made a major cultural impact. It was included in 2005 Academy Awards gift bags, used by Ari Gold on Entourage, and Oprah Winfrey and Bono even launched a red version to raise money for charity.
The success of the Razr may have also led to Motorola's struggles, critics say, as the company put too much of its focus into the Razr and missed the next set of phone innovations like touchscreen technology.
It's unclear exactly what a 2019 Razr will look like, but Motorola isn't the only device maker experimenting with foldable screens. Samsung is also looking to launch a foldable screen smartphone in the first half of 2019.
