If you think the current vinyl record comeback is just a temporary fad, think again. With vinyl sales on the rise, Chicago startup Reverb is doubling down on its effort to make buying and selling records even easier.
Reverb announced Friday that it has launched a new mobile app for vinyl owners. The new iOS and Android app lets you browse from Reverb's collection of new, used and rare records, and sell items from your collection right from your phone.
Reverb launched its record marketplace, Reverb LP, back in December. Since then, the startup says it has surpassed $1 million in total record sales on the platform.
“More than just a website, we’re creating an online community where buyers and sellers from all over are connecting over records, CDs, and other pieces of physical music that were previously out of their reach,” Reverb LP President Dan Melnick said in a statement.
Founded in 2013, Reverb has become a go-to destination for musicians who want to buy and sell music gear. The startup has raised $47 million to date from investors like Lightbank and PayPal co-founder Max Levchin.
After building a popular platform for musicians to buy gear, which Reverb says gets more than 10 million visitors each month, selling records was a logical next step---even if that meant competing with larger players like Amazon and eBay.
“While these platforms boast large audiences, they aren’t tailored to the music community," Melnick said at the time of Reverb LP's launch.
Earlier this year, artist Moby sold his entire record collection for charity on Reverb LP. The startup also recently launched Reverb Sites, which lets sellers create free websites to sell their record inventory online. Stores like Sit and Spin Records in Philadelphia use it to expand their online presence, the company said.
