Over the last year, Chance the Rapper has been working with ride-hailing company Lyft to raise money for his nonprofit SocialWorks, which aims to enhance arts and literature programs in Chicago Public Schools. And on Monday, the rapper and tech company unveiled a new video to promote the initiative.
The five-minute video features Chance, also known by his legal name Chancelor Jonathan Bennett, as an undercover Lyft driver. Throughout the video, Chance, wearing a hat and sunglasses, and driving a Ford Edge, continuously drops hints at who he really is while making conversation with unsuspecting Chicagoland passengers about the importance of giving back.
The video aims to spotlight Lyft’s in-app feature, Round Up & Donate, which allows riders to round their fares to the next dollar and donate the change to nonprofits the tech company partners with, one of which is SocialWorks.
Since the inception of Chance’s partnership with Lyft, the initiative has raised more than $100,000, according to Lyft.
But Lyft isn’t the only major tech company Chance has worked with on philanthropic initiatives. He teamed up with Google in December to donate $1.5 million to CPS and education engagement in Chicago. And in March, he won the Innovator Award at iHeartRadio’s Music Awards, where he was praised for his charity work.
“Together, Lyft and I have been giving back with Round Up & Donate for SocialWorks' New Chance Fund. Now, we’re having some fun in my hometown,” Chance said in a statement. “I hope this video encourages even more folks to give back just by taking a Lyft.”
