The Innovative Cities Index list, which has been published annually by 2thinknow since 2007, ranked the 500 most innovative cities in the world, with Tokyo coming in at No. 1. It was followed by London, San Francisco-San Jose and New York.
Los Angeles came in fifth and Boston came in seventh.
On this year’s index, Chicago moved up nine spots. Other U.S. cities that “improved dramatically” include Seattle, Houston, Denver and Philadelphia, according to the report.
Illinois' capital, Springfield, also moved up on the index, jumping 15 spots to 297th.
The next Midwest city to follow Chicago on the index was Minneapolis, which came in at No. 61.
