Popular GPS app Waze has a carpool feature, and it's now available in Illinois to help you share a ride during your daily commute.
Waze announced in June that the service has expanded to Illinois and Nevada. It was first launched in California, Texas and Israel.
Waze Carpool is a little different from ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft. Waze connects riders with drivers who are going in the same direction, but it also lets riders select specific drivers. A rider could choose someone who they work with, or someone with a high driver rating, for example. Waze Carpool allows for in-app chatting so riders and drivers can find the right person for their commute.

Waze Carpool calculates a payment on each ride based on the distance you carpool together, fuel cost and other factors, but riders never pay more than 54 cents per mile, the IRS mileage reimbursement rate. Waze Carpool doesn't take a cut of the transaction, instead monetizing the app by displaying ads.
The Waze Carpool app is available on both iOS and Android.
