A new augmented reality startup in Chicago making a measuring device that attaches directly to a smartphone, has surpassed its Kickstarter goal, raising a whopping $60,000 in a campaign that only sought to raise $20,000.

The startup, Arrim One, makes a professional augmented reality measuring device that attaches to both iPhone and Android models, which can be used to measure just about anything. Use cases include measuring raw materials for construction or easily seeing the dimensions of furniture.

The device can measure the dimensions of straight lines, circles, angles and curves, and users can measure by feet, inches, yards, millimeters or centimeters. The company says the device has the precision of plus or minus 1.5 millimeters within a 20 meter range by using a virtual 3D coordinate system.

The device is only 5 centimeters long, 3 centimeters wide, 1.5 centimeters thick and weighs about 35 grams.

The Kickstarter campaign has 27 more days to go. Available Kickstarter pledges for one Arrim device begin at $79, and the startup expects to deliver orders in September.
