Breakout actress and “Girls Trip” star Tiffany Haddish will be the face of Groupon's new Super Bowl commercial.
Groupon announced last month that it was returning to the Super Bowl with an ad that would feature an unnamed celebrity. The company announced Monday that the celebrity was indeed Haddish, who last year had a breakout year and became the first black female stand-up comedian to host Saturday Night Live.
“We’re thrilled to have one of the hottest names in entertainment as our new spokesperson,” Groupon’s Chief Marketing Officer Vinayak Hegde said in a statement. “Tiffany’s award-winning talent and well-known passion for our brand make her the perfect choice to serve as the face of Groupon.”
Groupon says the 30 second ad, which it will be unveiling closer to the game, will air during the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl. NBC is reportedly averaging more than $5 million for a 30 second spot in the big game.
This will be Groupon's first Super Bowl commercial since its "Tibet" ad in 2011, which was widely criticized and regularly tops lists of the worst and most controversial Super Bowl ads.
Haddish says she's an avid Groupon user, which made the commercial appearance a natural fit.
"Nobody knows Groupon like I know Groupon. I've been speaking out for them for years," Haddish said in a statement. "In fact, I should have already been their spokesperson. I've invested lots of money into buying Groupon deals, and it’s about time I got an even bigger return on my investment than just saving money at my favorite local businesses."
Groupon said Haddish will be the spokesperson for a series of ads beyond just the Super Bowl.
