Shiftgig, the on-demand staffing startup that helps prospective employees find jobs in a variety of industries, laid off 75 workers on Wednesday, cutting down the staff by a third to about 130 employees, the company confirmed to Chicago Inno.

Company representatives said they eliminated remote workers as they turn their attention to building up their Chicago-based team and technology investments. The startup has plans to hire employees in sales, engineering and business operations in the future. The news was first reported by Crain's.

“By building our team here, we have access to some of the most talented engineers, salespeople, marketers, and customer success managers in the country,” said Shelby Eversole, Shiftgig’s social media and PR manager, in an emailed statement to Chicago Inno. “Building a world-class, diverse workforce will propel Shiftgig closer to our mission of creating financial opportunity for the hourly workforce.”

Just in September, Shiftgig hired Wade Burgess to be its CEO. He was the former VP of talent solutions at LinkedIn. Shiftgig, which has raised $59 million since launching in 2012, currently operates in 14 cities. Earlier this year, Co-Founder and Former CEO Eddie Lou said he expects the company’s revenue to nearly double from 2016.
