The Second City, Chicago's famous improv comedy club that's helped launch the careers of actors like Tina Fey, Steve Carell and Dan Aykroyd, is launching a co-working space.
In a sign that the co-working trend may be becoming more than a generational fad, the nearly 60-year-old comedy theatre and training center announced it will provide flexible workspace options to the public. People will be able to work out of The Second City's newly expanded Training Center facility, and can access the space from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday, beginning on September 18.
The Second City is launching the initiative with Deskpass, the Chicago-based co-working subscription startup that lets people work at different offices across the city, and with Coworkaholic, an online hub and resource for co-working news.
“The Second City Training Center is excited to be opening up its creator community to even more Chicagoans, by offering people the opportunity to cowork in our uniquely creative environment," The Second City Training Center President Kerry Sheehan said in a statement.
There are nearly 100 co-working spaces throughout Chicago, from 1871, to Blue1647, to even the offices at Cards Against Humanity. The trend of shared office space has taken off across the globe in recent years, and roughly 1.2 million people worldwide will have worked in a co-working space by the end of 2017.
WeWork, the largest co-working player in the industry, just raised a massive new $4.4 billion funding round, valuing the company at close to $20 billion.
