Grubhub Co-Founder Launches New Startup Fixer, an On-Demand Handyman Service

Mike Evans began his career by helping you get food delivered right to your door. Now, he wants to send you a handyman.

Evans, who co-founded Grubhub in 2002, announced today the launch of Fixer, a startup Evans calls a "right now" handyman service that sends a professional to your door in under an hour.

Based in Chicago, Fixer was born out of Evans' frustration with finding a qualified repair person, and having them arrive in a timely manor, he wrote in a Medium post.

"I mean, I can order a pizza, or a car, or groceries with my phone. Why can’t I just order a handyman? Like… right now," he wrote.

Fixer aims to do just that. Fixer charges customers $80 an hour--but it doesn't round to the hour. ("If a job takes six minutes, than we only charge for six minutes," Evans said.)

There's no site visit fee or minimum to hit, and each "fixer" must go through four levels of screening processes. Areas of repair include electrical, plumbing, bathrooms, exteriors, furniture, and walls and interiors, according to its website.

Fixer, which is currently launching in private beta, says its fixers are employees, not contractors.

"We’re starting Fixer to create a career path for gig-economy workers," Evans said. "The uber drivers and instacart shoppers, and grubhub drivers of the world are working jobs, not developing careers. We think there is a better way.

"Our goal is to hire apprentice level fixers, increase their skills through training and apprenticeship, and retain them with a fair wage and benefits."

Evans left Grubhub in 2014 and did a bicycle trip across the country after stepping down from his COO role.
