Chicago HS Student Using Machine Learning to Fight Cancer Featured at Google I/O

We first brought you the story of Abu Qader last July, when we profiled the rising Lane Tech senior's machine learning app that helps doctors identify breast cancer tumors faster and with more accuracy. Yesterday, he was at the center of the tech world as his story was told during Google's I/O developer conference.

Qader is the founder of GliaLab, a machine learning startup that works with existing medical imaging devices to give smarter breast cancer diagnoses. Qader taught himself about machine learning via YouTube videos, and learned how to uses Google's machine learning technology Tensorflow.

A video of Qader's story of learning Tensorflow and becoming a self-taught machine learning expert played during Google's conference Wednesday, and he was personally invited to the event. Plus, he got some serious love from Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Chairman Eric Schmidt.

Great to meet Abu Qader today at #io17. I’m so inspired by his story of using @tensorflow to help others https://t.co/fMpqrwnPGq pic.twitter.com/2l5UzuROtW

An extraordinary story out of #io17 - Chicago high-schooler Abu Qader using #tensorflow to detect breast cancer https://t.co/YYT9NAxHNe

"Thousands of women are misdiagnosed with breast cancer every year, and it usually leads to death or enormous treatment costs," Qader told us last year. "Where we come in is right when the radiologist is making (the diagnosis) ... We have a lot faster, a lot more accurate, and a lot cheaper method of telling you what type of cancer tumor you have."

Qader said at the time that GliaLab's software is between 93% and 99% accurate, and gives results in real-time. Qader didn't immediately respond to an email request for comment.

Here's the video that played during Google I/O.
