This Chicago 'Smart Hat' Lets You Change Your Logo From Your Phone

Earlier this month, Washington Nationals baseball player Bryce Harper caught some heat after he was spotted wearing a Dallas Cowboys cap while at the front row of WWE’s “Monday Night Raw.” Sports fans in Washington DC didn't take too kindly to Harper's apparent display of Dallas allegiance; Washington and Dallas are fierce conference rivals.

But had Harper been wearing a "smart hat" from Chicago startup Zero Wearables, he might have been able quickly switch to a Redskins logo before the camera panned his way.

Founded by Chicago brothers Jamaal and Nuri Crayton, Zero Wearables' hat launched on Kickstarter this week and is halfway to its goal of raising $10,000. The hat works with an accompanying iOS and Android app that lets users insert different logos from their phone. You can choose from one of the company's licensed images, upload a logo, or create one yourself. You can also create multiple rotating images and select the speed and order in which they appear.

“There’s been no innovation or change to the baseball hat for over 150 years,” Jamaal Crayton, CEO of Zero Wearables and a sales manager at Caterpillar, said in a statement. “We’re giving the baseball cap a long overdue tech upgrade."

The Bluetooth-connected snapback hat has a 4-inch flexible display, is water resistant, and it comes in black, grey or camouflage. It even has a "find my hat" feature to help you track it down from your phone if it ever gets lost.

The hat is going for $99 on Kickstarter but expects to retail for $129, the startup says. Zero Wearables expects to ship to Kickstarter backers by August.
