SingleHop Co-Founder's New Startup Tracks Everything a Visitor Does on a Website

A new startup from the co-founder of Chicago tech company SingleHop wants to give companies more data on exactly how visitors spend time on their websites.

Dan Ushman, who launched cloud hosting company SingleHop in 2006 with Zak Boca, has spent the last two years working on a new startup, Concurra, which provides website optimization tools to agencies and marketers.

Concurra is designed to track and record virtually everything a visitor does on a company's website. It knows things like where you put your mouse, what buttons you click on, how far down you scroll on a webpage, and if you've highlighted any text. Its platform then allows companies to test different design strategies in real time by changing the location of a button or the content on the page, for example, to see how that changes user behavior. By having more data on website design, companies can build a site that keeps a user's attention longer and drives more sales, Ushman said.

Concurra lets you measure on-page user engagement and implement new strategies based on that data, Ushman said, with the goal of making smarter decisions about the changes you're making to your website. Rather than redesigning a website based on what you think looks best, Concurra can provide data about design tweaks that actually improved user engagement based on real site traffic.

"Everybody thinks their baby is the prettiest baby," Ushman said. "This tool arms agencies with the ability to take that emotion out of it and make it a data-driven design conversation."

Ushman likend Concurra to DVR, but for monitoring website traffic. It records everything that everyone does on a website, and provides heat maps that show user interaction on a page. Concurra is targeting agencies and marketers who use the service on behalf of their small business clients.

Ushman said agencies use Concurra in addition to things like Google Analytics and other website tracking tools.

After becoming publicly available last September, Concurra has landed a few dozen clients, Ushman said, including Steady Demand and SingleHop. Ushman splits his time between SingleHop and Concurra. SingleHop, a cloud hosting provider, has raised more than $50 million in equity since it launched.
