Chicago Inno Approved: The Startup Events You Need to Know Next Week

Monday

ImBlackInTech and 1871's Entrepreneur-in-Residence, Thomas K.R. Stovall, present a panel on "Cryptocurrency - Making Sense of Digital Currencies" moderated by Jimmy Odom, Acting Assistant Director for the State of Illinois Department of Central Management Services. He will be joined by panelists from the state government as well as digital currency startups. The event is free to attend, open to all and will be hosted at 1871 starting 6:30pm. RSVP here.

Tuesday

Simona Rollinson, Chief Information Officer at the Cook County Bureau of Technology, will speak at a City Club of Chicago luncheon on modernizing the Club's legacy platforms, including the roll out of the new Cook County website in June 2016 which has received praise from users, media outlets and national organizations alike. Noirefy, a job referral platform that aims to fight bias in hiring and recruiting (which we profiled recently), is hosting a meetup "Cocktails and Conversations: Diversity and Inclusion in 2017" at WeWork's Clark Street location. The event is free to attend and you can RSVP here.

Join the Anita Borg Institute for an information session about their efforts to launch and support more women in technology. ABI.Chicago, the local chapter of the nationwide organization, connects women technologists to network, learn and inspire one another as they pursue careers in computing. We are bringing back Food Inno, complete with a WHOLE NEW batch of programming and conversations, as well as a keynote featuring Tock CTO and cofounder Brian Fitzpatrick. The presenting companies and speakers will be different, but the general theme will be similar - an exploration of the local people and companies innovating within and around food. Join Black Women in Science and Engineering (BWISE) at 6pm for "Careers and Conversations" with Dima Elissa, CEO/Founder of VisMed-3D. A long-time champion of diversity and inclusion in the tech industry, Dima will talk about her career journey and how she started her business. The event is free to attend and will be hosted by mHub, Chicago's newest product development innovation center located in River West. Register here.

Fireside Chat with Flowers for Dreams Co-Founders: Join General Assembly for a free to attend, fireside chat with Joseph Dickstein and Steven Dyme, co-founders of Flowers for Dreams, the flower-delivery startup that Business Insider named one of the 20 Most Inspiring Companies in America and Instagram for Business dubbed one of 6 Brands to Follow in 2016. Flowers for Dreams donates 25% of their profits each month to a different local charity.

Fostering a Culture of Data Analytics: Join General Assembly for an inspiring and educational talk from Alex Welch, Director of Business Intelligence at OptionsHouse & Aperture Group, LLC, on fostering a culture of analytics. This presentation will be about how you, at any level in the organization, can begin to have an impact and make changes. While focusing on creating a data-driven culture, this also pertains to many other aspects of business and your career.

Is Coding A Career For Me? You’ve probably heard that coding makes for a great job path, but what are the nuts and bolts of a day-to-day job in this field? In this talk, Jay Wengrow, founder of Actualize (formerly Anyone Can Learn to Code), will talk frankly about what you can expect in this career. Th event is at 1871 and is free to attend.
