Chicago Developer Is Kickstarting a Remake of Cult Classic 'Mutant League Football'

Mutant League Football was released on the Sega Genesis back in 1993 and brought head-to-head football gaming into a post-apocalyptic world. Now, the game's lead designer is reviving the game in what it calls the "wildest, goriest, most outrageous football game ever."

Now named "Mutant Football League," the NFL Blitz-style football game is a "new and totally original take on the monster mash-up sports genre, and comes loaded with attitude and comic violence on the playing field," according to the game's Kickstarter page. Chicagoan Michael Mendheim, lead designer of the original game, is looking to raise funds to help launch the new version; the campaign has already surpassed its original $60,000 goal, having raised more than $77,000 as of Friday afternoon.

The company plans to release MFL on PC later this year and then on XBox One and PS4 in early 2018.

MFL will work online and offline and offer multiplayer gaming for 2 to 4 players. The goal is similar to other football video games, but with a super gory twist. Monster-like characters use chainsaws to "slice" through defenses, and defenders can become "ginormous” and grow 5-times their normal size to sack the quarterback. Stadiums are full of explosive mines, toxic moats and other hazards, and the outcome of a tackle usually ends up as exploding body parts or blood splatters.

"The overall presentation of MFL has been re-visualized from its predecessors, but the same sense of urgency that’s an inherent part of a real-world football characterizes our game play," the Kickstarter reads. "In short, the pacing of our MFL game is on steroids."

The original game inspired a Mutant League animated series, which aired from 1994 to 1996.

Kickstarter backers can get a digital copy of the PC game for $25.
