Last year Samsung unveiled its smart refrigerator, which has cameras that show you what's inside your fridge. Now, with its latest version, you'll be able to order meals from Grubhub right from your refrigerator when you see that it's empty.
Samsung launched its latest Family Hub 2.0 refrigerator at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week, and it has partnered with Chicago's Grubhub on a pretty nifty feature. Grubhub will be available on the Family Hub’s 21.5-inch LED touchscreen, allowing you to order a meal right from the refrigerator door.
Grubhub, which plans to make an official announcement on Friday, said ordering on the Family Hub will be similar to from your phone or tablet.
“We want to be there for our diners when they face the common problem of coming home to an empty fridge," Sudev Balakrishnan, Grubhub senior vice president of product, said in a statement. “Through our collaboration with Samsung, we can offer another quick and convenient way to order food from local restaurants, whenever the craving hits.”
The partnership makes sense for Grubhub, which would be wise to make inroads in the connected kitchen space. As everything from ordering to cooking becomes more automated and effortless through the Internet-of-Things, it's only natural for the Chicago delivery giant to want to work with new technologies. Amazon, which has recently become a major competitor to Grubhub in the food delivery space, just announced that you can now order food delivery from Alexa via the Echo and Echo dot devices.
A spokesperson for Grubhub said voice-enabled services create an "exciting use case for online ordering," but didn't elaborate on any current of future plans, except to say the company is "always testing new features and looking for innovative ways to make it even easier for our diners to order from their favorite local restaurants."
Grubhub says its app for the Family Hub 2.0 will be available in the coming months.
