Reverb Hires a YouTube Vet to Be Its Director of Marketing

Chicago-based online music gear site Reverb just plucked a marketer away from YouTube.

Reverb announced Thursday that it has hired Dan Abel as its director of marketing, where he'll be tasked with leading the company's marketing efforts. He joins the Chicago startup after spending more than four years at YouTube's New York office, where he served as YouTube’s content partnerships manager and was in charge of YouTube’s music offering. Prior to that, he spent two years in music marketing at Creative Artists Agency.

It's a big hire for Reverb, which has been growing fast since launching in 2013. Reverb says it has more than 8 million monthly visitors to its site, and at any given time has around half a million music gear listings. Reverb is a marketplace for musicians to sell things like guitars drums, and DJ equipment, and it also offers in-person or online music instruction through Reverb Lessons.

Reverb has raised more than $30 million in funding, including a $25 million Series B in 2015.

“The team at Reverb has created something much bigger than a website for buying and selling music gear — they’ve created a community of musicians and music lovers," Abel said in a statement. "I’m looking forward to helping grow that community through our marketing and branding efforts.”

Abel will be in charge of a marketing team of more than 20 at Reverb, and will work closely with Founder and CEO David Kalt and COO Dan Melnick, Reverb said.
