Amazon will open two new fulfillment centers in Aurora, Ill., adding 1,000 full time jobs to Illinois, Amazon, Intersect Illinois (Illinois' economic development corporation), and the Illinois Department of Commerce announced late Monday.
The company currently has fulfillment centers operating in Edwardsville, Joliet and Romeoville (another is under construction in Monee). Through these fulfillment centers, Amazon has announced bringing over 7,000 full-time jobs, with benefits, to Illinois over the past two years.
“In just over two years, Illinois has proven itself to be an ideal location from which Amazon can continue offering customers our vast selection and superfast shipping speeds,” said Akash Chauhan, Amazon’s vice president of North American operations in a release. “We’re excited to be growing and creating even more full-time jobs that offer comprehensive benefits on day one as well as generous maternity and parental leave benefits.”
At one facility, which will be nearly 1-million-square-feet, employees will pick, pack and ship small items to customers such as books, electronics and consumer goods. At the other 400,000-square-foot facility, employees will pack and ship larger items, such as big screen TVs, Amazon said.
“With a talented workforce, central location in the Unites States and the North American market, and a world-class transportation hub, Illinois is proving it has assets no other state can offer,” added Intersect Illinois CEO Jim Schultz in the statement.
Amazon also recently opened two on-campus pick up locations, one at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and one at University of Illinois at Chicago, and announced that it will open a physical bookstore in Lakeview next year.
