This IL University Is One of the Best Schools for Coders in the World

Which schools produce the best coders in the world? That's a question programmer ranking site HackerRank wanted to answer with its study that measured the coding chops from over 5,500 students at more than 120 schools around the globe.

The results indicate that the US doesn't quite hold up against the rest of the world. Only one American college placed in the top 10, with schools from Russia, China and Vietnam finishing in the top 3 respectively. (China's San Yat-sun Memorial Middle School--which equates to high school level of education in the US--placed 2nd).

Of the top US schools, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign finished an impressive third, behind UC Berkley and Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. UIUC came in at No. 14 in the world.

To determine its rankings, HackerRank hosted a "University Rankings Competition" where students from across the world participated in an event that measured coding skills (businesses use HackerRank as a tool when hiring developers). Schools had to have at least 10 participants from their university in order to qualify for the rankings.

Here are the top 10 US universities with the best coders:

1. University of California, Berkeley

2. Georgia Institute of Technology

3. University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

4. Ohio State University

5. University of Texas at Austin

6. University of Washington

7. University of California, Irvine

8. North American University

9. University of Southern California

10. UCLA
