This Smart Toothbrush Films Your Mouth While You Brush

The Internet-of-Things is everywhere. Even in your toothbrush.

Chicago startup Onvi has created what it calls the world's first video toothbrush, named Prophix, which uses a video camera paired with an iOS app that lets you see the areas you've missed while brushing. The high-tech brush connects to your phone via Bluetooth (no pun intend) and lets you watch your brushing in real time.

The device also takes still images of your teeth so you can monitor problem areas and track your improvement over time. The toothbrush comes with multiple attachments like a mirror and a rubber tip that can increase blood flow and remove plaque and tartar. The app also sends you oral healthcare tips to stay on top of your dental hygiene.

Onvi was founded by Craig Kohler, a Chicago dentist who has used live video to record his dental procedures in his practice.

“As I used intraoral cameras and monitors to treat my patients, I saw how it helped them to better understand the status of their oral health, and in turn, adopt better cleaning habits,” Kohler said in a news release. “With today’s advancements in technology, it is finally possible to bring this never-before-seen dental solution into the home with Prophix.”

The Prophix is currently available for pre-order for $299, and expects to hit the market in Q3 of 2017, when it will retail for $399. The app currently works with the iPhone 7, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 5s and iPhone 5.

At $400, Prophix certainly isn't for everyone. Plus, there's the question of if you need a "smart" toothbrush with a camera in the first place. But for those who are looking to step up their dental hygiene, the device could make for a nice 2017 Christmas gift.
