Motorola Solutions just laid off 200 workers from its Chicago and suburban offices.
The cuts are in the company's Schaumburg, Elgin and Chicago offices, as first reported in the Daily Herald. Motorola Solutions spokeswoman Tama McWhinney confirmed the layoffs to Chicago Inno, saying in an email that the company "continue(s) to size our organization for our current needs as a leaner and more focused company."
McWhinney said that the majority of employees have elected to take a voluntary separation package that "provides a more generous severance incentive for those who have been considering leaving the company."
Some of the positions may be refilled as the company puts a stronger emphasis on software and services, she added.
"Decisions involving our valued, loyal colleagues are difficult," McWhinney said. "In keeping with Motorola Solutions' core values, we help our colleagues through the transition by providing severance and other benefits, as well as professional outplacement assistance."
The layoffs come after the company cut 200 positions in October 2014.
Motorola Solutions recently moved its headquarters from Schaumburg to downtown Chicago, where it brought 800 employees to its new home at 500 W. Monroe in the Loop. The company had around 3,000 total Chicago-area employees prior to the cuts.
