ContextMedia, a Chicago tech company that puts tablets in doctor's office waiting rooms and exam rooms to help patients better understand their healthcare, just acquired a competitor as it continues its quick pace of growth.

10-year-old ContextMedia announced Wednesday that it has acquired AccentHealth, a New York City and Tampa, FL-based maker of interactive tablets for the exam room. AccentHealth was founded in 1995 and has its technology in more than 30,000 physician waiting rooms across the US. The company has established a partnership with CNN to include programming from the network's Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta and HLN host Robin Meade. ContextMedia said it will bring its technology into AccentHealth's network of practices.

With the acquisition, ContextMedia says it will now reach 55,000 healthcare locations, making it the "largest healthcare decision platform at the point of care" in the US. ContextMedia says it expects to have a presence in 70% of all practices in the US by 2020.

"ContextMedia has a vision to embed actionable information and intelligence into every critical healthcare decision," Rishi Shah, ContextMedia Chief Executive Officer and Founder, said in a statement. "Our healthcare decision technologies drive better health outcomes by empowering collaboration between consumers and their healthcare providers, transforming the communication of treatments and conditions, offering assessment technology for early detection and simplifying complex health information."

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

ContextMedia launched in 2006 with a Waiting Room TV product to give people healthcare-related content, rather than watching cable news or whatever was on the office TV. The company expanded into the exam room in 2013 with an interactive tablet that allows doctors to provide more information to patients at the point of care. ContextMedia also designs and manufactures its own hardware, which allows it to customize its products, control the supply chain and keep costs down.

ContextMedia has been one of Chicago's fastest growing tech companies, and this year the company says it's adding nearly one percent of all practices in the country each month.

"This acquisition brings us closer to our vision of achieving ubiquity," added Shah. "The expanded presence of our platform will accelerate our ability to drive positive health outcomes at scale."
