Chicago Inno Approved: The Startup Events You Need to Know This Week

Monday kicks off the beginning of Chicago Ideas Week, a week-long city-wide event series that features a ton of high-profile speakers. Skinnygirl CEO Bethenny Frankel, Tock and Alinea owner Nick Kokonas, United States CTO Megan Smith, Hollywood agent (and Rahm's brother) Ari Emanuel and actor Brian Cranston are all set to speak throughout the week. When you're not hitting up Chicago Ideas Week, here are other Chicago Inno Approved tech events worth checking out.

Monday

Chicago health-tech hub MATTER is hosting a forum on Initiatives in Genomics. The event will highlight the promise of genomics as well as the lingering questions and challenges. Speakers include Harry Leider, chief medical officer of Walgreens; Ryan Fukushima, COO of Eric Lefkofsky's startup Tempus; and Jacob Plummer, vice president of global business development at Allscripts. Tuesday

Northwestern's student co-working space The Garage is hosting an event on bookkeeping basics for startups. The event will highlight the importance of setting up a bookkeeping system, and how to properly maintain it. More info here.

Wednesday

Cleversafe Founder Chris Gladwin, who's currently on to his next project at stealthy Ocient, will speak with TechNexus CEO Terry Howerton Wednesday in a fireside chat at TechNexus. Cleversafe was acquired by IBM last November for over $1.3 billion. More info here.

On Wednesday, 1871 is hosting Disrupt HR, an event designed to energize, inform and empower executives, business leaders and professionals in the fields of Human Resources. Speakers include Harry Gottlieb, founder of Jellyvision Lab and Jackbox Games; Dorie Blesoff, chief people officer at kCura; and Stella Ashaolu, founder and CEO WeSolv. More info here.

Thursday

Built in Chicago's monthly meetup takes place Thursday at VelocityEHS for a Halloween-themed networking event complete with beer, wine, and passed apps. Costumes are encouraged. More info here.

Data Science Chicago is hosting a meetup on demystifying data science Thursday at Metis Chicago. A panel of data scientists will discuss their paths into the profession, and speakers include Tom Schenk Jr., Chicago's chief data officer; Greg Reda, Data Science Lead at Sprout Social; and Jessica Freaner, Data Scientist at Datascope Analytics. There will be a HoloLens Hackathon Thursday at SPR Consulting in the Willis Tower. The meetup looks to get developers together to build applications and test them on the augmented reality device. More info here.
