A Chicago startup that helps hospitals with recruitment efforts has raised new funding as more hospitals rely on its services amid staffing shortages.

AMOpportunities raised $2 million in a "Series A2" round of funding, bringing its total venture funding to nearly $9 million since it launched in 2013. Investors in the round include Chicago's OCA Ventures, PACE Healthcare and Dreamit Ventures. AMOpportunities raised over $5 million earlier this year.

Founded by Kyle Swinsky and Benjamin Bradley, AMOpportunities makes a platform that allows medical students to more easily be matched with clinical rotations at health care systems. The startup's software handles many of the administrative tasks required to find and recruit medical students, and allows teaching hospitals to spend more time educating and interacting with students.

Since 2013, the startup says it's provided more than 3,500 students with rotations at over 250 clinical sites. It's worked with University of Miami, UChicago Medicine, MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, Florida International University and other institutions.

AMOpportunities' growth comes as hospitals across the U.S. are facing staffing shortages amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. The problem is especially acute in rural areas. According to a survey of rural hospitals from the Chartis Group, 99 percent of rural hospitals surveyed said they were experiencing a staffing shortage, with nearly the same percentage noting a difficulty in finding nurses.

AMOpportunities' platform provides a one-stop-shop for student support, applications, program information, document collection and other resources to help medical students find clinical rotations.

AMOpportunities won UChicago's New Venture Challenge in 2017.
