A Chicago startup born out of the 2012 Obama presidential campaign has raised new funding to bring its data science tools to more organizations.
Civis Analytics announced Monday that it raised $30.7 million in Series B funding from investors including Alumni Ventures, Drive Capital, Verizon Ventures, Silicon Valley Bank and former Alphabet Chairman Eric Schmidt.
Civis has created a software platform for data scientists that helps them make data-driven decisions, similar to how the Obama analytics team used data to target voters and help re-elect the former president.
The startups is led by CEO Dan Wagner, who served as the chief analytics officer on Obama's 2012 campaign. He founded Civis in 2013 to help other companies use data to identify, attract, and engage with their audience and customers.
The startup's customers include Verizon, iHeart Radio, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Discovery, and the Human Rights Campaign. It also works with the public sector, selling its tech to the four largest cities in the U.S.
With Discovery, for example, Civis helped the television company acquire customers for its discovery+ product, which has grown to more than 15 million members.
The new funding comes as Civis says it experienced record revenue in the 12 months ending last June. In 2020, Civis saw its revenue climb 60% and it was the company's first full year of profitability.
Civis last raised a $22 million Series A round in 2016.
