A health care startup making digital playbooks for surgeons and device companies has raised new funding.

ExplORer Surgical announced Friday that it raised $2.5 million in a funding round led by Aphelion Capital, as well as the Sofia Fund, a Minneapolis-based fund focusing on women-led technology companies. Previous ExplORer Surgical investors also participated in the round.

To date, ExplORer Surgical has raised more than $11 million in funding. The company last raised $5 million in 2019.

Founded in 2015 by CEO Jennifer Fried and Alex Langerman, ExplORer Surgical makes a cloud-based “digital playbook” for hospitals and device companies, which allows them to guide, track and analyze activity in the operating room, and improve communication and performance.

Each user can see content on any connected device, which also collects important data during procedures, according to the company. The platform allows for remote case proctoring and case observation, as well as features for zooming in and out on objects, procedural areas and other elements that require better visibility.

The startup’s software has been used in a research study at Indiana University. Other clients include Prytime, a Texas-based medical device company. ExplORer Surgical said it saw 6x year-over-year revenue growth in 2020.

The new funding will be used to hire new employees for its technology, marketing and customer success teams. ExplORer Surgical said it intends to raise more funding later this year.

Fried, ExplORer Surgical’s CEO, is also a co-founder of the Midwest Fund, a geographic-specific VC group from The Fund that invests in early-stage startups across the region.
