Hooks

Deal: $750,000

Investors: Techstars, KFund, Lanzame, Bankinter and other angel investors.

What they do: Hooks, a member of the 2015 Techstars Chicago class, is a mobile app that allows you to set up and receive push notifications on virtually any topic you want. Hooks sends you information on-demand and in real-time across a range of topics, like weather updates, baseball scores, or your favorite band's tour schedule. Having launched just a year-and-a-half ago, Hooks has seen more than 3 million subscriptions to topics and 2 million notifications sent in a single day.

Other details: With the new round of funding, Hooks has announced a new feature that allows users who are getting the same push notifications to chat within the app. The startup realized that many users were subscribing to the same push notifications, and it wanted to create a space where those users could engage with one another.

“We turn each notification into a global chat room for sharing and chatting in real-time.” Hooks co-founder Oleg Kozynenko said in a statement. “Every time a user receives a notification, he automatically joins a chat room with thousands of users who have received the same information at the very same time.”
