A local veterinary startup is looking to reshape its industry by creating a more consumer-centric environment through its modernized services.

Charlotte-based Petfolk, founded in 2020, is on a mission to revolutionize the veterinary medicine industry by providing present-day, accessible and professional pet-care facilities through proprietary technology and a consumer-based data platform. The startup puts an emphasis on transparency to relieve stress and an overwhelming process that may occur in legacy vet clinics for both pets and their owners.

Petfolk is aiming to steer away from clinical standards. For example, pet owners are given full access to their pets' records, service costs and details of care provided during appointments. The local company also eliminates waiting rooms that would typically compel anxious pets to socialize.

Dr. Audrey Wystrach, co-founder of Petfolk and a veterinarian for more than 28 years, told CBJ she understands that furry companions are often considered members of the family. That is what drove Wystrach and co-founder Michael Wystrach — who is her brother, to create a company that allows pet owners to feel more involved.

"I think it's time that the veterinary industry starts to transform and use modern tools to embrace and empower our customers," she said. "And I think, in general, I believe that our modern consumer is really going to drive choice ... Pet has taken a whole new definition."

Petfolk utilizes three verticals to serve its customers. It offers veterinary services at its currently four physical locations — three open in the Charlotte area and one in Raleigh. The startup also has a mobile clinic that provides wellness services across its present footprint, which will soon expand. And for those who can't make an in-person visit or need a quick consultation, Petfolk offers 24/7 virtual care via phone, video or text.

"I think really building a tech-enabled business will allow us to improve processes for both our customers and our veterinarians," said Audrey Wystrach. "Our goal is to decrease the friction that our customers feel with all of the blocking and tackling of scheduling appointments and doing all the things that we need to do to take care of our pets."

In August of last year, Petfolk announced the closing of a $40 million Series A fundraise, which drew participation from celebrity backers such as country singer Miranda Lambert. The funds will be used to expand the company's footprint to 20 locations across the Carolinas, Florida and Georgia. There will be four clinics open in the Charlotte area by the end of this year. Wystrach said the vet startup will launch a Series B fundraise later in 2023.

Petfolk also moved into its new headquarters at Camp North End last November to accommodate the company's local teams and mobile staff traveling throughout the Southeast. The office includes flexible space for in-person and virtual meetings, as well as areas for training and development.

Wystrach said she chose Charlotte as the company's new home not only because the area is very pet-friendly, but also due to the area's continuous growth.

"I think Charlotte exemplifies and embodies a lot of the core values that Petfolk has, and is intrinsically focused on creating communities that are tech focused and are really advancing the way that the customer is experiencing life," she said. "I think we were just inspired by Charlotte and what it is doing, so just a natural fit for Petfolk to be here."

Petfolk has cared for more than 40,000 pets and has seen year-over-year growth of over 5,000% since launching in 2020. Wystrach said she aims to continue to advance Petfolk at a rapid trajectory.

"I think that there are a lot of veterinary practices that provide great medicine, but I think when you look at truly reshaping the experience for the customer and for the health-care teams — I think that's where we win," she said.
