Charlotte-based Atomized is helping developers deploy software faster

Two Charlotte entrepreneurs are using their backgrounds in engineering to disrupt the way developers are launching new software.

Nik Kotov and Eddie Herbert are the co-founders of Atomized, a platform that helps developers set up and deploy their applications in the cloud. Kotov said by using the platform, developers can stop spending valuable time setting up infrastructure and focus more on creating their software.

"Right now developers waste 20% or more of their time on setting up the necessary infrastructure instead of writing great software," he said. "Atomized plugs directly in with the code base and cloud provider and sets up a pipeline to deploy and deliver software automatically."

Kotov and Herbert met in 2018 while working together as engineers at Red Ventures in Indian Land.

Atomized launched in mid-April and onboarded more than 40 applications in its first week. Herbert said he hopes to hit 1,000 customers. The ultimate goal, however, is to make Atomized the go-to platform for end-to-end cloud management.

"Our mission is to make the future of DevOps as painless as possible," Kotov said.

Atomized isn't Kotov's first foray into the entrepreneur space. In 2019, he founded Frontline, a platform that helped companies automate compliance requirements. He was accepted to Y Combinator's 2020 summer program for his work on Frontline.

"We raised some money at demo day there, and I realized we needed to pivot and shift focus from compliance to helping developers launch faster," he said. "This is a problem that exists in companies today, in general."

The platform can host three types of applications: a static site, a container site or a database. Kotov said they raised a $500,000 pre-seed round last year and plan to begin working on a seed round later this year.
