The public is invited to cheer on Charlotte's newest class of African American millennial entrepreneurs, who will compete for thousands of dollars in prizes as they present their ventures in a series of lightning round pitches before a panel of judges.

The City Startup Labs Demo Day will be held March 29 from 6-9 p.m. at UNCC Center City, 320 East 9th Street in Charlotte. The event is free but registration is strongly recommended.

City Startup Labs (CSL) conducts a Center of Excellence, where African American millennials and Returning Citizens (the formerly incarcerated) learn how to research, plan, launch and operate startup enterprises. CSL provides an academy of instruction, training, mentoring and coaching to prepare them to become viable entrepreneurs, thereby contributing to not only themselves, but their families, communities and the country.

As a hybrid accelerator/incubator, CSL is unique in its focus on this population and the process of building three classes of assets: human capital, social capital and economic capital. CSL grew out of an idea to address the issue of the employability of young men of color, then added women of color and the formerly incarcerated to its programs.

Through a two-year pilot with the Urban League, and the 2016 establishment of a Center of Excellence for Entrepreneurial Competency, Innovation and Leadership (CoE) at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, City Start-Up Labs has been able to educate over 60 new entrepreneurs. Of those from the pilot, 6 ventures are now up and running (2017).
