Social Venture Partners Charlotte is a nonprofit that aims to be a conduit between investors and the local social enterprises that need their funds. It focuses on investing financial, social and human capital into the Charlotte region’s nonprofit sector, determined to tackle social and economic inequality here. The group is also behind SEED20, an annual event that brings together Charlotte-based nonprofit entrepreneurs.

What is SVP’s perspective of Charlotte’s startup ecosystem? Social Venture Partners Charlotte is proud the Queen City has built a reputation that supports and cultivates startup ventures with resources, connections and vibrant community support. As a city known for financial technology, insurance tech and healthtech, we are optimistic that Charlotte is collectively building the same level of support for emerging and innovative nonprofit organizations. These grassroots organizations are creating novel, accessible and scalable solutions to complex social problems. We aim to make Charlotte a thriving city for everyone, including our neighbors who are working toward upward mobility.

How would SVP describe its biggest success in 2023? SEED20 returned to the stage with our signature pitch program for the first time since 2019. Over 500 people witnessed the SEED20 OnStage production either in person or virtually via live stream, which was a new option for 2023. Not only was the program inspiring, but over $80,000 in cash, donations, and in-kind prizes were awarded to the nonprofit participants. As part of this, we set a record of $51,000 raised from the audience. Beyond the stage, we also invested nearly a thousand hours of skilled volunteer support from seasoned business professionals and introduced expanded programming to offer more than 175 nonprofits the opportunity to learn new fundraising skills, make donor connections and network with one another.

How does the company plan to grow in 2024? We have an engaged donor volunteer model that has served Charlotte well for the past 19 years, and we want to make an even greater impact in 2024. To increase our reach in the community, SVP Charlotte is expanding our internal staff capacity to deliver more skill-enhancing workshops, strategic projects and capacity-building programs for nonprofits. Our organization aims to expand our marketing efforts to attract 20% more community and corporate donor volunteers, which will ultimately grow the number of organizations and nonprofit projects we can support. We are aggressively pursuing efforts to diversify our funding through new partnerships, donors and revenue models to fuel our growth plans.
