Editor's note: This profile is part of Charlotte Inno's special report on The Fire Awards, a celebration of the region's leaders in innovation. Winners in each of six categories were revealed during a Feb. 15 awards event. Passport Labs Inc. is the Fintech category winner.

Founded in 2010, Passport is a transportation software company that focuses on digital parking payments, enforcement, permits and other mobility services. The company aims to make parking access easier and more equitable for consumers.

Over the last few years, Passport has ramped up innovation by expanding its payment options, streamlining enforcement systems and growing its footprint into cities such as Austin, Texas, through a partnership with car services app Way.com. In 2021, the company raised $90 million in capital from Six Street Growth — another step in Passport’s continued efforts to scale the business. More than 800 cities across North America utilize Passport’s platform to manage mobile-pay parking, parking enforcement, digital parking permits and mobility management.

What is Passport’s perspective of Charlotte’s startup ecosystem? Charlotte is home to a diverse hub of startup ecosystems. In the past, the community has focused significantly on financial technology (otherwise known as fintech) and banking. However, recently, there has been a boom in the broader variety of other industries calling Charlotte home, including health care and other technology companies. We couldn’t think of a better fit than in the Charlotte area.

How would Passport describe its biggest success in 2023? In November of 2023, Passport celebrated its 10th anniversary. From the company’s humble beginnings as a single mobile app provider, we have stayed committed to being a partner for cities to provide innovative methods and tools to shape the future of mobility. We hope to continue to support Charlotte and other partnering cities in expanding their physical and digital infrastructure to meet their unique challenges and needs.

This past year, we held a thought leadership conference where industry experts and municipal leaders gathered to network and learn about the latest innovative methods and tools shaping the future of mobility. Through these types of events, experts can exchange ideas and learn from one another to help make strides in the world of parking and curb management.

How is the company planning to grow in 2024? Growth is the name of the game in 2024 for Passport. We will continue to expand our current product offerings by allowing cities to address the constraints and gaps they encounter in their daily operations within parking and curb management. The company is committed to continuous improvement and ongoing support as the growing needs of cities evolve in this new, innovative era.
