The Research Triangle Cleantech Cluster has revealed that three Charlotte-area companies and organizations are among the nominees for its fourth annual Cleantech Innovation Awards.

That awards program recognizes outstanding contributions from companies, organizations, government agencies and individuals that are driving cleantech solutions and deployments across North Carolina, the nonprofit organization says. RTCC, based in Raleigh, is a group of government, academic and nonprofit leaders focused on pushing the growth of an environmentally friendly economy.

UNC Charlotte, the city of Charlotte and Duke Energy Corp. (NYSE: DUK) are nominees for the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Cleantech award. The trio was selected because of their collaboration on the PoleVolt project.

The project, which launched in February, is an initiative to build electric vehicle-charging stations on streetlight poles for people who lack the off-street parking needed for home charging systems.

The city of Raleigh and the N.C. Sustainable Energy Association are the other nominees in that category.

The city of Charlotte is also a nominee for Cleantech Impact awards for local government and energy. Other categories for Cleantech Impact include transportation, water and economic development. There are awards for Cleantech Research Innovation, Cleantech Talent Development, Cleantech Champion of the Year and Cleantech Entrepreneur as well.

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony and networking event to held on Nov. 9, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the SAS Institute in Cary. The awards are judged by leaders and executives from the cleantech industry and public sectors, RTCC says.

“This is a critical time for cleantech in North Carolina, and RTCC is excited to celebrate the innovative technologies and initiatives of our members and other individuals and organizations with our annual Cleantech Innovation Awards,” said Deb Wojcik, executive director. “This year’s nominees have made significant contributions across a wide range of projects, ranging from clean energy, water, transportation, local government, economic development, research innovation, entrepreneurship, talent development, equity and diversity.”
