A Chicago-based digital consulting firm has hired a new CEO from Charlotte, with plans to expand to the local market.

EKI-Digital named Hollis Williams as chief executive officer. He will be based in the Charlotte region. Williams replaced Robert Blackwell Jr., who transitioned to chairman of EKI.

EKI, founded in 1998, is eyeing Charlotte as a key market for expanding its operations from Chicago and Omaha, Nebraska. It plans to open a Southeast office within the next year, according to a news release.

Williams will spend time in Omaha and Chicago in addition to Charlotte as he leads the company’s expansion. The location of the Charlotte office has not yet been determined.

Williams will direct the firm’s strategy in implementing its digital portfolio and analytics modernization initiatives for clients, which include those in the government, retail and financial-services sectors. He will also oversee EKI’s philanthropic efforts through Alpha Mission, the firm's platform for creating pathways to end generational poverty in minority communities.

“Charlotte continues to experience unprecedented growth, given its business-friendly environment, high quality of life and draw for talent across a variety of industries,” Williams told the Charlotte Business Journal. “Our leaders have also made intentional commitments to advancing economic opportunity and racial equality.

"The goals of EKI-Digital and Alpha Mission closely align with how Charlotte is positioned for the future. We want to do our part in helping move Charlotte’s progress to the next level ... we’re excited to hit the ground running in this community.”

Prior to EKI, Williams had more than 20 years of experience in technology, financial-services and government leadership. He most recently served as chief operating officer of Microsoft’s U.S., state and local government business, leading sales teams within the division, according to the release.

He also chaired the tech giant's global employees resource group, Blacks at Microsoft. The program works to enable African American students to attend college and pursue a career in technology.

Prior to Microsoft, Williams built and led technical teams at companies such as Bank of America Corp. (NYSE: BAC), M3 Technology Group Inc. and EDS Federal Corp.

“I’ve dedicated my entire career to driving meaningful outcomes, including helping companies develop effective programs that enhance business processes and improve lives,” Williams said. “… Our work in Chicago and Omaha is only the beginning. I’m honored to lead our company into its next phase of growth and expand our footprint into other markets, drawing on innovation that enables positive, data-driven outcomes for corporations, governments and entrepreneurs.”

Blackwell will advise Williams as he steps into the new role. Williams said he is looking forward to addressing challenges as a team and improving business processes.

“I’ve known Robert for many years and have long admired his leadership in driving innovation and his willingness to shift dynamics and take risks,” Williams said. “He’s seen firsthand how transformative technology and digital assets can impact communities. I believe the path he’s charted for EKI-Digital serves as a successful model for businesses, governments and nonprofits alike. He has strong convictions around how to drive sustainable improvement for our most disadvantaged communities and a genuine heart for people.”
