After making its debut last year on Startup Genome’s “emerging ecosystems” list, Buffalo once again has made the cut.
The Queen City, however, dropped from the 61-70 range in last year’s rankings to 81-90 this year.
Startup Genome’s emerging ecosystem rankings, as part of its annual Global Startup Ecosystem Report, breaks down the top 100 emerging ecosystems for high-growth potential in the coming years.
Europe is the most represented region in the emerging ecosystem top 100 list and has increased its presence in the rankings from 37% last year to 41% this year.
Copenhagen ranked No. 1, followed by Hong Kong and Detroit, respectively.
In the ranking of the 81-90 range, Buffalo was joined by cities including Burlington, Vermont; Reykjavik, Iceland; Western Denmark; and Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.
Buffalo scores included:
- Performance (6 out of 10), a calculation of startup exits and successes during the past year.
- Funding (less than a 1 out of 10), which analyzes access local startups have to funding and year-over-year funding growth.
- Connectedness (less than a 1 out of 10), or how connected the ecosystem is to global knowledge.
- Market Reach (7 out of 10), which measures early-stage startup access to customers.
- Knowledge (less than a 1 out of 10), which examines innovation through patent activity and innovation.
- Talent & Experience (2 out of 10), an analysis of access to and degree of startup experience of tech talent in a given region.
Compared to last year’s rankings, Buffalo’s scores dropped for performance and funding.
Although it’s a regional win to appear on Startup Genome’s list once again, Buffalo continues to rank below some comparable cities on the list, such as Pittsburgh; Hartford, Connecticut; St. Louis, Missouri; and Columbus, Ohio.
