A Buffalo health care management startup has been acquired.

PointClickCare Technologies, a Mississauga, Ontario-based health information technology platform, announced today the acquisition of Buffalo-based Patient Pattern.

The two companies have a shared goal of enabling better care and outcomes for high-needs populations and providing solutions to care teams. Combining the two businesses will further this vision, according to Travis Palmquist, senior vice president and general manager of senior care at PointClickCare.

Patient Pattern, which employs 23, has created an electronic health record and integrated care management platform that allows practice providers who are transitioning to value-based care models a way to manage both value-based care and traditional fee-for-service functions on one platform.

Value-based care is a proactive, patient-centered approach that focuses on improving patients' care to have better health outcomes and reduce costs.

“The whole value-based movement can be intimidating and how they should be adjusting their strategies … is part of their reality now,” Palmquist said. “I want them to know we embrace that here and want to accelerate our ability to help them thrive as value-based care becomes a bigger part of their day-to-day.”

The acquisition will help it do just that, he added.

Over the last year, Patient Pattern has grown its annual recurring revenue by over 500%, according to Steve Buslovich, Patient Pattern co-founder and CEO. The acquisition gives the startup more resources to support that and keep growing.

The startup, founded in 2013, has gotten investments from Launch New York, Buffalo Angels, Jack Greco and StartFast Ventures. Patient Pattern has also had Steve Nicosia as an adviser through Launch New York.

Buslovich will oversee value-based care for the senior care market at PointClickCare, which has about 2,100 employees across North America, and Patient Pattern will continue to maintain its employee base and office in Buffalo. Many local nursing facilities are already PointClickCare customers, so it’s a natural fit for Patient Pattern to stay here and grow a team with additional resources, Buslovich said.

“It’s an evolving market, and as it evolves the care gaps that exist need to close,” he said. “That’s what us coming together is trying to accomplish.”
