A recognizable face in Buffalo’s startup community has a new charge.

Clark Dever has been hired as vice president of product management at Wrap Technologies. He’ll oversee the expansion of the team and product development at Wrap Reality, the company’s virtual reality training system.

Based in Arizona, Wrap (NASDAQ: WRAP) builds technologies and services for the law enforcement industry.

“This is a critical issue in our country,” Dever said. “We want to help heal the relationship between communities and police, and the way to do that is through better and more consistent training and tools like (the BolaWrap tether, which helps detain people without injuring them).”

Dever was most recently a senior product manager at Techstars and previously worked for the Techstars project in Buffalo. He also brought a division of defense contractor Red-Inc. to Bufalo, with a few dozen employees working in Larkinville, though Red-Inc.’s presence here faded away.

Dever leads the Bootsector nonprofit with friends Jordan Walbesser and Jack Greco. The goal is to support a grassroots technology and entrepreneurship team in Buffalo.

Dever said his goal as he builds the Wrap Reality team is to do as much hiring as possible in Buffalo, including software developers and business roles.

“I’d like to do what we did with Red-Inc., which was to build a center of excellence or a division of the company in Buffalo that competes in the global marketplace with cutting-edge technology,” he said.
