How to be a better CEO: OZmosis' John Osberg on 'actualizing' your potential

It’s been about a year since John Osberg filed the LLC paperwork on his business consultancy, OZmosis.

At the top level, he’s been focused on branding, networking and personal self-development.

Beneath the catalog of services, Osberg is offering clients a pathway that he has traveled down himself. That pathway to entrepreneurship led to a phase of life when he was depressed, overweight and drinking too much.

He emerged from that bursting with energy – a process of self-actualization that he now preaches to clients who range from local startups to nonprofits to corporations.

“I believe in human-first coaching, which means you are as good a CEO or employee as you are a person,” Osberg said. “If you are a healthy person and someone with vitality, you are going to be a magnet. It’s something I did in my own life.”

Osberg is heavily networked in Buffalo’s startup community, working with ETG, Helm Experience and UX, Grit Seed, Tresca Design and others, but his list of clients extends into sectors that range from financial to restaurants. He is establishing an OZrezidency – a program where he sets up shop at a small business for a few hours a week and makes himself available to anyone who walks in.

It’s a job that blends with his friendships and hobbies – so that Osberg said he works all day, every day but often feels like he isn’t working at all.

He is particularly interested in galvanizing a community with a sense of momentum – from startup wins to a growing population – but also sees plenty of opportunity to share that opportunity with everyone who lives in Western New York.

“I’m excited because growth means opportunity,” Osberg said “It can cascade down to the bottom, where people don’t have the same chances that we do. If we do this right, it’s a chance for those people to punch a ticket to a more meaningful life where they can provide for their families and community.”
