Buffalo Business First chose 10 companies this year for our inaugural Inno Fire awards, representing the breadth and diversity of Buffalo’s startup scene. These are their stories.

CrowFly

CEO: Nita Bhatia

Headquarters: 737 Main St., Buffalo

Founded: 2017

What the company does: A web-based marketplace for structured settlements.

A structured settlement is a monetary award, such as winning a personal injury lawsuit and the money is paid out over time.

The awardee can sell those settlements to get all the cash at once, but much less than the entire settlement is worth.

It’s long been a chaotic word full of unsavory actors. CrowFly leaders believe that their web-based marketplace can bring order and transparency to the process of buying and selling those settlements.

Now for the good news: CrowFly is … flying. The company’s revenue is up more than 400% annually the last two years and is in the process of nearly tripling its team to 15 employees. Co-founder Nita Bhatia was named CEO in late December.

“We’re going to continue building out our org chart, which will help us continue our growth,” Bhatia said. “We have only tapped a small portion of our potential market share and marketplace.”
