For most of the mergers and acquisitions we cover, companies decline to disclose financial terms. Sometimes, though, that unspoken rule is broken, giving us insight into the wide variety of deal sizes taking place in Massachusetts.

Last month, the differences were especially stark. Progress, the Bedford-based software company, acquired Seattle-based DevOps and DevSecOps startup Chef for $220 million. Baring Private Equity Asia, meanwhile, spent $2 billion to acquire Southborough digital strategy and services firm Virtusa Corporation.

Tufts University got the best deal yet. Jeff Stibel, a Tufts alumnus and the founder of brain-computer interface company BrainGate, decided to donate the company and its technology to his alma mater. BrainGate, which develops neurotechnology that uses micro-electrodes implanted in the brain, has already received FDA investigational device exemption for human trials.
