Some of tomorrow's top innovators are doing business out of a building that was completed in 1865.
Boston's Old City Hall, nestled in a corner of Downtown Boston at 45 School St., has been operating as an office building since 1971. Underscore VC moved in just over a year ago and, over the summer, completed phase two of a three-stage renovation. The space is designed to welcome investors, incubating entrepreneurs and the firm's UFirst Accelerator participants to collaborate.
Despite the age of the building, Underscore's space is bright. Soft yellows provide sunny accents on chairs and walls. Most walls are painted to act as whiteboard surfaces. Natural light streams in from the office's many windows, which also provide a look into the entertainment happening just outside—gaggles of tourists take photos in the building's plaza, and Boston's Revolutionary War-dressed tour guides navigate the busy streets right alongside contemporary businesspeople.
"Outside of this window, you can very regularly see reenactments," said marketing manager Devin Nash. Meanwhile, inside, entrepreneurs are often hosting potential investors in the office's many conference rooms.
Underscore also frequently hosts events in the space; the sweet spot is about 50- to 70-person events, said Nash. Other perks include snacks on hand, catered lunch every Monday and a fully outfitted in-house recording studio.
