The 13th annual International Space Station Research and Development Conference kicks off in Boston today at the Boston Marriott Copley Place.
This year, ISSRDC will celebrate the innovation and advancements that are driving scientific breakthroughs in low Earth orbit. The ISSRDC is hosted by the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS), NASA, and the American Astronautical Society.
The conference begins Monday, July 29, with workshops and a tour of the Aurelia Institute, a nonprofit space architecture R&D lab, education, and outreach center based in Cambridge, and its TESSERAE (Tessellated Electromagnetic Space Structures for the Exploration of Reconfigurable, Adaptive Environments).
The TESSERAE has been flown to the ISS to test the feasibility of autonomous magnetic self-assembly in microgravity and Aurelia invites conference attendees to see the full-scale mock-up at the soft public launch on Monday.
The conference also hosts a wide array of panels, speakers and technical sessions that cover topics from space policy in low earth orbit, genes in space and technology development on the ISS throughout its three days in Boston.
In addition to panels, on July 30, the ISS National Laboratory will announce the winners of its Igniting Innovation Awards, a grant program for companies developing medicines in space for use on Earth.
