A Boston-area company has made the finals for the South by Southwest EDU Launch Startup Competition.

Culture Crate in Cambridge is among seven finalists that will showcase their innovations at the Austin, Texas event. The SXSW EDU competition features early-stage startups making waves in the education space.

This year’s applicant pool was the largest in the organization's history, according to SXSW.

Culture Crate is a subscription-based mailed cultural box that features activities like soap making and games from the Middle East, accompanied by educational materials. It is meant to help children embrace their own cultures, according to its website. It was co-founded by Nadine Zaza and Simba Gandari.

The SXSW EDU competition will take place March 5. Three finalists will win awards. The following day will have pitches from student-run education initiatives as part of the Student Impact Challenge.

Other finalists are:

  • CUENTOLOGIA in Delaware
  • Keenious in Norway
  • Maro in Bozeman, Montana
  • NaTakallam in New York
  • Shoelace Learning in Nova Scotia, Canada
  • Struggly in Austin
