Salsify is shrinking its team and moving some roles abroad as the company aims to set itself up for a “more agile and competitive future,” according to Jason Purcell, Salsify’s CEO and co-founder.

The Boston-based e-commerce software “unicorn” said 110 employees were impacted by layoffs last week.

“Virtually every company across the globe is currently evaluating how to best organize in order to innovate and grow while serving their customers with the maximum possible efficiency.  While Salsify is well positioned for the future, we decided it was time to take the steps toward a global restructure that positions us for a more agile and competitive future,” Purcell said in a statement to BostInno.

Purcell said this restructuring includes a “net global reduction in force” and moving some roles across markets, including to Portugal. More than 100 new roles will be added in Portugal, where Salsify already has a presence, as part of this restructuring.

Once the global restructuring is complete next year, Salsify said it will have around 545 employees.

BostInno last reported layoffs at Salsify in November 2022. At the time, Salsify said it laid off approximately 11% of its workforce, or 90 positions, with the majority of them in the U.S. Based on the company’s 11% layoff estimate, Salsify had over 800 employees prior to making cuts.

Salsify cited its rapid growth over the past two years as the reason behind its layoffs last year. Since 2020, Salsify has acquired SKUvantage and Alkemics and more than doubled its employee base, a company spokesperson told BostInno.

Purcell said Salsify is providing employees who lost their jobs in this round of layoffs with extended health coverage, severance benefits and career resources.

“This strategic restructuring creates a more streamlined organization that will more efficiently deliver industry-leading product innovation and world-class support to our customers around the globe,” Purcell said.
